Savannah Guthrie was missing from her usual spot on the Today desk during the show’s latest taping.
Along with Craig Melvin and Al Roker, the anchor was nowhere to be found on the morning show on Tuesday, July 21. Craig and Savannah’s lead anchoring spots were filled by Sheinelle Jones and Willie Geist, who revealed the reason for her lack of an appearance.
“Savannah’s taking a little time to film the very first episodes of the big Wordle game show coming here to NBC next year. We cannot wait for that,” he said, adding, “Craig, enjoying a little family time on vacation.”
Their absence comes just days after an intruder bypassed security at NBC Studios and lunged at Craig while also allegedly yelling the N-word.
A source told the Daily Mail Savannah found the security breach “incredibly triggering.
“Even though she had just left, just knowing it happened at her workplace is enough to shake anyone,” the source mentioned. “It hit everyone hard, but it hit differently for her.”
“This couldn’t have come at a worse time for her emotionally after everything she’s been through this year. How much more can one person take?” the source added.
Savannah has been through a lot over the past few months with the ongoing disappearance case of her 84-year-old mother Nancy, who went missing from her home just north of Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.
The host and the rest of her family first learned Nancy was missing after she failed to attend her local mass. Shortly after that, the Pima County Sheriff’s office deemed her home a “crime scene” after discovering concerning evidence inside the property.
A few weeks after the incident, the FBI released footage from Nancy’s Google Nest camera showing a potential masked subject approaching her front door. Despite finding a visual of the potential subject, the authorities have yet to name a suspect or find Nancy.
Nevertheless, the case remains open with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and FBI fielding over 40,000 to 50,000 potential leads and tips since then.
Savannah remains persistent in her search for her mother, with her family even offering a reward of up to $1 million for information on Nancy’s whereabouts.
