It seems that Ryan Reynolds may have had a change of heart regarding Deadpool's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reynolds appeared at Fanatics Fest in New York City, where he discussed Deadpool's future in the MCU and the comics he'd still like to see adapted.
“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies," Reynolds said. "I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer. There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
Deadpool May Have a Bigger MCU Future Than Previously Teased
Though Reynolds doesn't spell it out, there's some interesting wording here that suggests Reynolds has reversed course on previous statements about Deadpool's MCU future. Specifically, Reynolds had previously said that he didn't think Deadpool would be a leading man again, but a supporting character.
"I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to center him again," Reynolds said previously. "He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group."
However, Reynolds alluded to another "Deadpool film," and not a Deadpool appearance or role in a larger ensemble, suggesting that may no longer be the case. It could be an imprecise choice of words, but the writers named by Reynolds back up the idea. Nicieza wrote the very first Deadpool solo story, 1994's Deadpool: The Circle Chase, and returned to write the 50-issue Cable and Deadpool ongoing series from 2004 to 2008. Similarly, Duggan wrote the solo Deadpool series for Marvel from 2013 to 2018. These are stories with Wade Wilson in the leading role, not ones where he's playing backup to another hero or team.
Deadpool's MCU Future Remains Uncertain
Either way, Deadpool's MCU future still feels distant and uncertain. Even Reynolds uses the word "remotely," suggesting whatever is planned has not kicked into high gear. Whether that's Deadpool 4, another team-up movie like Deadpool & Wolverine(maybe Deadpool & Cable?), or Deadpool appearing as part of a team or ensemble (X-Force, perhaps?) is equally unclear, for now."
Ahead of Deadpool and Wolverine's debut, Reynolds also considered the possibility of Deadpool crossing paths with the Avengers or the X-Men. The latter is possibly more likely now that the X-Men are crossing over with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday.
"If he becomes either, we’re at the end," Reynolds says of joining either superhero team (Deadpool has been a member of the Thunderbolts, X-Force, the Avengers, and other teams in the comics). "Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey."
