Avengers: Doomsday Already Boasts The Most Comic-Accurate X-Men Costumes Ever Seen
The early costume reveals for Avengers: Doomsday suggest Marvel is embracing the visual identity of the X-Men in a way Fox rarely did. After years of muted leather suits and heavily modified designs, these costumes look remarkably close to their comic counterparts.
Magneto finally appears in the classic red and purple color scheme that has defined the character for decades. While Fox gave Erik Lehnsherr some impressive armor and darker outfits, the iconic combination of colors associated with the comic book villain has never truly appeared in live action beyond a quick tease. This version looks much closer to the legendary design many expected.
Professor Xavier also receives a surprising comic-inspired update, with his green shirt matching a more traditional interpretation of the character. Cyclops, meanwhile, gets perhaps the most recognizable upgrade, wearing the classic blue and yellow tactical suit complete with the yellow chest detailing associated with his comic appearances.
Mystique's costume may be one of the biggest changes. Rather than continuing Fox's controversial approach of having her mostly uncovered due to her shapeshifting abilities, the character appears fully dressed in her famous white dress outfit, finally complete with the skull belt and signature headpiece.
Beast also receives a long-awaited upgrade. Unlike Mystique, his semi-nude appearance and more classic 1990s-inspired facial design bring him much closer to the beloved animated and comic versions. Nightcrawler's exact costume remains harder to see, but concept art suggests Marvel is embracing his classic look, while the poster confirms the familiar red and black color palette.
How Avengers: Doomsday's X-Men Costumes Compare To The Best Fox-Era Suits
One of the biggest frustrations with Fox's X-Men franchise was that it often came close to delivering comic-accurate costumes before changing direction entirely. The movies frequently teased improved designs, only to abandon them shortly afterward. The strongest example came at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse.
It finally introduced the younger versions of the team wearing costumes heavily inspired by their comic appearances. Cyclops' blue and yellow uniform was one of the most faithful live-action adaptations of the character's classic look, while Mystique's design also moved closer to her comic identity.
Unfortunately, those costumes were immediately abandoned by X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The team moved away from individual costumes to a matching blue and yellow uniform, continuing Fox's habit of moving away from the designs audiences wanted.
Mystique's treatment was especially inconsistent. While Apocalypse suggested a more traditional superhero costume for her, later appearances once again relied heavily on her nude blue-skinned appearance rather than giving her a proper uniform.
