Hundreds of students across Webb County's Precinct 2 headed into the new school year with backpacks, school supplies and other essentials through a series of back-to-school giveaways hosted by Webb County Commissioner Rosaura "Wawi" Tijerina.
According to the commissioner's office, about 500 clear backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed during events held at multiple locations throughout the precinct. Students also received school uniforms, free haircuts and meals.
The giveaways began at the State Rep. Tracy O. King Community Center, where students enrolled in the Kids Café Program received school uniforms through a partnership with Penske. The Kids Café Program provides free meals to children throughout the year.
The outreach continued at the Bruni Community Center, where students from Bruni, Oilton and Mirando City received backpacks and free haircuts through partnerships with NextEra Energy and Grace Trucking.
The final giveaway was held at the Santa Teresita Community Center, where students received backpacks and school supplies through a partnership with Medina Electric.
"Education is the key that opens all doors in life," Tijerina said. She encouraged students to stay focused on their education and make positive choices throughout the school year.
Tijerina also thanked community organizations, county departments and volunteers who helped organize the giveaways, including the Webb County Sheriff's Office, Webb County Public Health, the Webb County Regional 9-1-1 Administration, Gateway Community Center, Imagine Dental and Molina Healthcare.
Back-to-school giveaways continue across Webb County as local governments, nonprofits and community organizations help families prepare for the 2026-27 school year.
