The Philadelphia Phillies adjusted their roster before a crucial series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, placing backup catcher Garrett Stubbs on the 10-day injured list and recalling outfielder Bryan De La Cruz.

The Philadelphia Phillies entered Tuesday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers focused on securing a series victory, but the organization was forced to make an unexpected roster adjustment before first pitch. Philadelphia placed backup catcher Garrett Stubbs on the 10-day injured list because of left wrist inflammation and promoted outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from Triple-A.

Phillies lose Garrett Stubbs but receive positive injury update

The Phillies announced that Stubbs’ injury is limited to inflammation, which provides some optimism that his absence may not extend beyond the minimum injured list period. However, the team will continue monitoring his progress carefully as wrist injuries can often affect a hitter’s ability to maintain consistent production.

Stubbs has served as Philadelphia’s backup catcher behind All-Star veteran JT Realmuto, who remains the clear starter at the position. During the 2026 season, Stubbs has struggled offensively, hitting .179 with two RBIs, but his defensive reliability and experience have made him a valuable piece of the roster.

The Phillies will hope Stubbs can return quickly and provide more offensive support when Realmuto needs rest. With a long postseason race ahead, maintaining depth behind the plate remains a priority for a team with championship aspirations.

Bryan De La Cruz receives opportunity to contribute

To replace Stubbs on the active roster, Philadelphia recalled Bryan De La Cruz from Triple-A. The outfielder has not appeared in a game for the Phillies yet, but the organization hopes he can provide energy and right-handed offensive depth during an important stretch of the season.

De La Cruz previously showed power potential earlier in his career, hitting more than 19 home runs in both 2023 and 2024. However, he has struggled to consistently recreate that production recently, making this opportunity with Philadelphia an important chance to prove he can contribute at the major league level.

The roster move comes at a critical point for the Phillies, who entered the game with a 56-45 record. Philadelphia remained just three games behind the National League East division leader and held a four-game advantage in the Wild Card race, keeping the team firmly positioned in the postseason picture.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Phillies are expected to continue evaluating roster improvements while managing injuries and performance issues. Every depth move could become significant as Philadelphia attempts to build a roster capable of competing deep into October against elite teams like the Dodgers.
