The San Diego Padres could make one of the biggest moves of the MLB trade deadline, with All-Star closer Mason Miller reportedly becoming a potential trade candidate despite his dominant 2026 season.

The MLB trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and the San Diego Padres once again find themselves at the center of baseball’s biggest rumors. However, unlike previous seasons, the team’s direction remains uncertain. Sitting at 49-51 and only 2.5 games out of a National League Wild Card spot, San Diego must decide whether to push for a playoff run or reshape its roster with major moves.

Padres could shock MLB by moving dominant closer Mason Miller

President of baseball operations AJ Preller has earned a reputation as one of the most aggressive executives in Major League Baseball. Throughout his tenure, Preller has consistently shown a willingness to make bold decisions, and the possibility of another blockbuster move before the deadline would fit his history.

Last season, Preller stunned the baseball world by acquiring Mason Miller from the Athletics in a massive trade. The Padres paid a significant price, sending away top prospect Leo De Vries, who was considered one of the most talented young players in the sport. Now, only one year later, Miller could once again become the centerpiece of a major deadline storyline.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, San Diego is considering trading Miller if the right opportunity becomes available. The right-handed reliever has three remaining years of arbitration eligibility after this season, making him not only one of baseball’s most dominant bullpen arms but also one of the most financially attractive elite players available.

Passan estimates there is a 40% chance Miller could be traded before the deadline, a surprising possibility considering his current performance. Any team acquiring him would be adding a pitcher capable of completely changing the dynamic of a postseason bullpen.

Mason Miller’s historic dominance creates unprecedented trade value

The reason San Diego would even consider moving Miller comes down to long-term roster construction and financial flexibility. One possible factor in a complicated deal could involve including Xander Bogaerts’ contract, which still has seven seasons remaining at $24.5 million annually. A trade involving both players would require creativity, but Miller’s value is so high that unusual scenarios cannot be ignored.

Miller has been nearly untouchable in 2026, continuing to prove why he is viewed as one of the most dominant relievers in baseball history. Through 40.2 innings, he owns an incredible 0.89 ERA with 75 strikeouts and a 0.84 WHIP, putting together one of the best seasons by a bullpen arm in recent memory.

For the Padres, trading Miller would be an extremely difficult decision. Elite closers with multiple years of team control rarely become available, and replacing his impact would be nearly impossible. However, if another team offers a massive package of young talent or financial relief, Preller has shown throughout his career that he will consider any possibility.
