Perkins Wants Durant Focused on Houston’s Future

Kevin Durant has long been recognized as one of the greatest offensive players in NBA history, and his relentless work ethic remains one of the defining traits of his legendary career. This offseason, footage of Durant training alongside Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero quickly spread across social media, earning praise from many fans who admired the veteran's willingness to mentor one of the league's brightest young talents.

Not everyone shared that enthusiasm. During an appearance on NBA Today, ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins questioned Durant’s priorities, arguing that his attention should be directed toward the Houston Rockets' young core rather than players from rival organizations. Perkins specifically mentioned Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. as teammates he would rather see working alongside the future Hall of Famer.

According to Perkins, Houston acquired Durant to transform the Rockets into legitimate championship contenders, making leadership just as important as scoring. He believes the veteran forward should use the offseason to strengthen relationships with the players he will share the court with when the new NBA season begins.

The comments come after a turbulent year for Houston. Although the Rockets opened last season looking like one of the Western Conference's most dangerous teams, injuries and off-court distractions eventually slowed their momentum. Reports linking Durant to a controversial burner account, despite later being disputed, created unnecessary headlines and raised questions about the team's internal chemistry.

Houston still finished with an impressive 52-30 record and secured the fifth seed in the Western Conference, but its playoff run ended quickly with a first-round elimination at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers. That disappointing finish increased the pressure on the organization to enter next season with a stronger and more unified locker room.

From another perspective, Perkins may be reading too much into a single workout. NBA players frequently train with stars from other teams during the offseason, exchanging ideas and sharpening their skills before training camp begins. There is also no public evidence suggesting Durant has ignored his Rockets teammates throughout the summer.

Even so, Perkins' comments highlight an important storyline to watch. As the oldest and most accomplished player on Houston’s roster, Durant’s influence extends far beyond his scoring ability. If the Rockets hope to become true title contenders, building trust and chemistry with their young core could prove just as valuable as anything he accomplishes inside the gym.
