Pat Murphy and the Milwaukee Brewers suffered their first loss in the second half of the 2026 MLB season on Tuesday, falling to the New York Mets by a 4-0 score at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
The Brewers’ offense was shut down by New York’s pitching, particularly by rookie Zach Thornton, who earned his first win in the big leagues in just his fourth career MLB start.
Thornton pitched like a seasoned vet throughout his six-inning start, as he allowed zero earned runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts across 81 pitches.
Mets interim manager Andy Green gave Thornton his flowers for the pitcher’s solid start.
“He doesn’t lack for confidence,” Green said, via Zach Sweet of MLB.com. “It’s strikes and it’s attack and it’s intent, and those are really powerful things to have.”
Even Murphy had something to say about Thornton.

The two-time National League Manager of the Year gave it to Thornton for a job well done on the mound.
“That kid pitched very well,” Murphy said. “He attacked the zone. He didn’t give up free bases. Credit the kid for how he pitched.”
Meanwhile, the Brewers had former Mets pitcher Brandon Sproat taking the loss. Sproat surrendered two earned runs on four hits and walked four batters with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
With the series tied at 1-1, the Brewers will look to bounce back in the finale Wednesday night, with Logan Henderson scheduled to get the ball for Milwaukee. The Mets, on the other hand, are expected to start Christian Scott.
