The first trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has generated many fan theories, but one minor detail about Steve Rogers might be the most interesting. It’s not his return that is getting people’s attention; it’s the way he is returning.

Marvel’s New Steve Rogers Might Not Be Who Fans Think He Is

Steve is not the hardened warrior that the audience last saw. Instead, he seems very laid back. His expression is calm, and he has an almost carefree smile, which is a little bit out of place, especially with Doctor Doom as the MCU’s most formidable threat.

It has left many fans wondering if Marvel is purposely keeping something from them about Captain America’s role. Steve Rogers in ‘Infinity War’ was a man who’s been warped by years of fighting. All of his decisions were made with the weight of being a leader who never walked away from the battle.

The version seen in the ‘Doomsday’ trailer is quite different. He doesn’t appear to be a veteran who came back to save the world, but rather a man who has lived a long time in peace. His smile, his posture, and his mannerisms suggest a man who has left war behind instead of one preparing for another impossible battle.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Steve Rogers Theories

Perhaps it’s not the original Steve Rogers, after all. The Multiverse Saga has taught us that variants can look the same, but live very different lives. A Steve who never experienced the same battles would naturally behave very differently, and it could even explain why Thor’s reaction appears unusual.

There is another much simpler theory. This may be the Steve that decided to stay in the past with Peggy Carter after ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. He would be expected to look less tough than the soldier audiences recall, after years of peace and normal life.

The most disturbing one, though, is that Doctor Doom has somehow affected his mind. It could be a manipulation, illusion, or some other multiversal trick. Yet, until the film comes out, we won’t know. Marvel may be hiding Steve’s identity intentionally.

Whether he’s a variant, a retired hero, or part of Doctor Doom’s larger plan, one thing seems increasingly clear: Marvel wants fans questioning everything they think they know about Captain America’s return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
