Anne Hathaway may be a staple at the movies, but that doesn’t mean she can enjoy every movie theater staple!

While promoting her new film The Odyssey with Matt Damon in the Friday, July 17 episode of Brittany Broski’s Royal Court interview series, the 43-year-old actress revealed that she is allergic to perhaps the most iconic theater snack: popcorn.

Hathaway — who is set to appear on the big screen in five different films this year alone — made the “confession” after Broski, the host of the medieval-themed interview show, inquired about the costars’ “go-to” movie theater snack orders.

After Damon, 55, and host Broski compared how they customize their movie theater popcorn, PEOPLE’s World’s Most Beautiful 2026 cover star revealed that she cannot partake in the classic cinema bite due to an allergy.

“So, uh, this confession: I’m allergic to popcorn,” the actress said, drawing shock from her Odyssey castmate.

“Whoa. Oh, that’s tragic,” Damon said of Hathaway’s popcorn revelation, as she admitted, “I know. It’s really sad.”

Hathaway did not share any more details about her allergy.

An allergic reaction to popcorn likely stems from an allergy to a protein found in corn, according to NY Allergy & Sinus Centers.

Corn comes in a variety of forms — including oil, flour and cornstarch — which can make corn allergies “hard to find without proper knowledge,” per the specialized medical practice. “Some refined corn oils may not contain zein and are safe to consume; however, it is important to consult an allergist beforehand and exercise extreme caution.”

The New York-area practice’s website lists popcorn among “Corn Allergy Foods to Avoid,” along with cookies, baking mixes, crackers, cornflakes, peanut butter and more.

Since she cannot enjoy the popular, and arguably most quintessential movie theater snack, Hathaway revealed that her “go-to” cinema order is “pretzel bites with mustard.” And if that is not available, she added, “I do peanut M&M’s and either a Coke or a Dr. Pepper.”

Meanwhile, Damon is a popcorn devotee — and specifically likes to balance the salty snack with Raisinets, he told Broski. “Honorable mention for Milk Duds as well,” he added, as the host joked that the chocolate pieces are “quite the dad candy.”

“But I was eating it long before I was a dad,” Damon clarified, before joking that he loves “the caramel staying in your teeth for hours afterwards.”

Hathaway plays Queen Penelope opposite Damon’s King Odysseus in The Odyssey, which is in theaters now. Starring in Christopher Nolan’s retelling of Homer’s epic, she told PEOPLE, is a bit of a dream come true.

When Chris told me that we were doing The Odyssey, I actually had to stand up and walk around and said, ‘I’m going to need a second.’ I first encountered Greek mythology in eighth grade, and it was a true love,” she told PEOPLE alongside costars Damon and Tom Holland. “I watched shows about Greek mythology just for fun even before this.”
