A Myrtle Beach man fleeing from police attempted to carjack a vehicle while two people were inside.
Ahmet Erdinc Atansay, 37, is accused of breaking into a vehicle while its owners were at the beach, using their stolen credit cards at a Walmart, fleeing from police when confronted and then attempting to steal a vehicle at a city gas station.
Atansay is charged with carjacking, financial transaction card fraud, financial card theft, breaking into a vehicle, shoplifting and resisting arrest. He remains in J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
On July 7, Myrtle Beach Police responded to Walmart, 541 Seaboard St., in response to credit card fraud. When officers arrived, they saw that the suspect was still in the store and an officer approached him, asking him to come with him, an incident report said. However, Atansay fled the store and ran to a nearby gas station
Atansay then proceeded to get into the driver’s seat of a vehicle while its owner was pumping gas, the report said. Two people were inside the vehicle, including a juvenile. One of the passengers tried to stop Atansay from putting the vehicle in drive by pushing him away and turning off the vehicle, the report said. The officers were able to reach the vehicle and remove Atansay from the driver’s seat before he drove away, the report said.
Earlier, on the same day, officers responded to the public beach access at 5th Avenue North and North Ocean Boulevard for a break-in of a vehicle. A husband and wife returned to their vehicle after being at the beach and found that their vehicle had been broken into and items stolen, including five credit cards, Massachusetts driver’s licenses, a Louis Vuitton wallet worth $1,200, a Boss wallet worth $400 and two pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses.
The husband received notice that one of his credit cards was being used at the Walmart. After officers found Atansay, the victims’ credit cards were found on him and were returned to the husband and wife, the report said.
