Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were escorted by Horry County Police officers through Myrtle Beach International Airport last week, but details about their actions remain murky.
An Horry County Police Department representative confirmed that police officers escorted agents at the airport, but would not clarify the date or confirm whether anyone was detained.
Although ICE agents were operating in Myrtle Beach, the Horry County Police Department provides safety and security services at Myrtle Beach International Airport.
It’s unclear whether ICE regularly operates in the Myrtle Beach International Airport. An email sent to the ICE media office Monday was not returned by the time of publication.
Does Horry County work with ICE?
Since 2018, the Horry County Sheriff’s Office has had an 287-G agreement with ICE using the Jail Enforcement Model, which allows staff at J. Reuben Long Detention Center to screen foreign-born individuals at the jail to transfer into ICE custody.
However, a representative from the Sheriff’s Office confirmed officers were not involved in the alleged incident at Myrtle Beach International Airport.
According to ICE’s list of participating agencies, HCPD has not partnered with ICE with a 287-G agreement, despite Horry County police officers escort of agents at the airport.
When asked if HCPD has worked with ICE in the past, Horry County public information officer Ashley Boles said the department “works with multiple local, state and federal agencies at the Myrtle Beach International Airport and throughout Horry County when asked.”
The Sun News has requested further information, including records and contracts of Horry County’s work with ICE.
