A Charlotte, North Carolina, woman has been arrested in the death of a pedestrian in North Myrtle Beach.
Police say she had been under the influence while driving.
Dawnya Tatiana Little, 43, was charged with felony DUI, resulting in death and felony DUI, resulting in great bodily injury. She is accused of hitting Lloyd Shelton, 77, of Plains, Virginia, and another unknown person with a vehicle while the two were walking on North Ocean Boulevard.
Shelton and another person were near 300 North Ocean Boulevard on July 18 when authorities say they were struck by Little. The Horry County Coroner’s Office said in an email Tuesday that Shelton had been taken to Grand Strand Medical Center where he died just after 9:30 p.m.
It is unclear what Shelton was doing when he was struck by the vehicle and if he was here on vacation. That area has several hotels.
Police found alcohol in car, report shows
According to an incident report from North Myrtle Beach Police, Little was headed south on North Ocean Boulevard in a 2007 Honda Pilot. Shelton and the other pedestrian entered an area marked as a crosswalk and “were lawfully crossing the roadway.”
Little then failed to yield to Shelton and the other person, who had the right-of-way, according to the report. The two were struck by the vehicle while there were still in the crosswalk.
North Myrtle Beach Police officers responded to the area in reference to a collision around 8:42 p.m. An officer at the scene observed that Little appeared impaired, the report says. Little “exhibited slow and slurred speech, lethargic body movements, and was unsteady,” the report said.
Little had also refused to take a sobriety test. Following her arrest, police found an alcoholic seltzer in the rear driver’s side door, the report said.
Little is being at held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $300,000 bond.
