The NL playoff race is heating up as the MLB’s second half of the season is underway. While the Los Angeles Dodgers still have the best record in the NL by a sizable margin, various other teams, including the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves, are all trying to get in the best position possible before October arrives.

Recently, MLB insider Buster Onley of ESPN detailed what area he thinks those three teams should pursue ahead of the upcoming MLB trade deadline.

“So many clubs are looking for a right-handed hitter, with very few apparent options, but the teams most aggressively in need of a starting pitcher — we’re looking at you, Cubs, Phillies and Braves — should have a lot of good options. Among the declared unloaders, there are Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes and Robbie Ray, with the possibility that many others join them,” he opined.

The Braves in particular have seen their fanbase clamor for some more starting pitching help for months now. Atlanta’s depleted pitching staff got off to a surprisingly hot start to the year, but have since fallen back down to Earth, and at the moment, Chris Sale is the only arm that most would be comfortable with starting a playoff game.

The Phillies and Cubs could also use some additional help in that department, thanks to both injuries and a lack of viable playoff-caliber starters on their respective rosters to begin with.

It’s also not out of the question that the Dodgers themselves could look to add another starting pitcher before the trade deadline, as Los Angeles has also dealt with major injury issues. If the Dodgers were to add another starter while the Braves, Cubs, and Phillies idled, it’s safe to say that those fanbases wouldn’t be thrilled.
