The MLB trade deadline is less than two weeks away. As many playoff hopefuls look to improve their odds, a couple of 2025 postseason squads could look to sell. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal appeared on Foul Territory TV on Tuesday to discuss the potential plans of both the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres. Shared via X (formerly Twitter), Rosenthal opined that both teams could look to sell instead of buy ahead of August 3rd.

“The Padres and Blue Jays, if you had to guess, would be trending towards selling, says @Ken_Rosenthal,” the baseball-focused page shared on Tuesday.

Heading into the 2026 campaign, the Blue Jays and Padres looked to be contenders. After all, Toronto made the World Series for the first time since 1993 last October. Meanwhile, San Diego fell to the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card round. While both rosters were retooled this offseason, many believed that each team would be back in contention this year.

However, injuries and ineffectiveness have rocked both rosters. The Blue Jays currently sit last in the AL East, 11.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. That is a far cry from their division win in 2025, toppling the New York Yankees in the process. They have several players who could be moved ahead of the deadline, including starter Kevin Gausman and outfielder Daulton Varsho.

Meanwhile, the Padres find themselves in a different set of circumstances as well. For years, San Diego head of baseball ops AJ Preller has added at the trade deadline. That includes last year’s mega deal that brought closer Mason Miller to Petco Park, along with a few other moves. Now, Preller might have to move Miller and other contributors, like reliever Adrian Morejon. Will the Padres and Blue Jays elect to enhance their future chances at the deadline or hold onto their key pieces?
