The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the top teams in baseball right now, but that doesn’t mean there are no areas of improvement on the roster. With this team considered as a legitimate World Series contender, suring up some flaws would be significant for their chances. There are likely some veterans who will be dealt before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, but which player is a great fit for the franchise? Let’s take a look at who one outlet believes it to be.
Willson Contreras labeled as fit for the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the trade deadline
The Athletic’s MLB Trade Deadline Big Board is one of the industry leaders in terms of which players could be on the move ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline. The Brewers have some names that they are fits for, including a powerful first baseman in Wilson Contreras from the Boston Red Sox. The quartet of Tim Britton, Johnny Flores Jr, Chad Jennings, and Eno Sarris wrote the blurbs for each player.
The deal likelihood is towards the middle of their scale and pairing the 34-year-old with his brother, William, would be fun for the Brewers. Below is what they said about Contreras being dealt:
“Very little has gone as hoped for the Red Sox, but don’t blame Contreras for their disappointment. Acquired in an offseason trade, Contreras has, if anything, exceeded expectations. A four-time All-Star known for his bat, Contreras is on pasce for the best year of his career at the plate, and his transformation frmo catcher to first base has yielded good grades on defense. He’s among the league leaders in wRC+ and could be one of the highest-WAR position players traded at the deadline.”
Contreras has stepped up this season as he has a career-high .932 OPS with 22 home runs, 64 RBI, and 49 runs scored across 91 games. Jake Bauers and Andrew Vaughn have been splitting time at first base, so getting a powerful right-handed hitter in the lineup would help. With the Brewers ranking last in MLB in home runs, this is a way to get more power at a power position.
Contreras has some time remaining on his five-year, $87.5 million contract he originally signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is under contract through the 2027 season, but there is a club option in 2028 for $20 million with a $7.5 million buyout.
Milwaukee has the prospect capital to make some big moves ahead of the trade deadline, but it will be intriguing as the Red Sox have been red hot as of late. It will be intriguing to see if the Brew Crew can pair the Contreras brothers together for the last few months of the 2026 season and beyond.
