A man arrested in connection with a murder case dating back to 2024 recently pleaded not guilty in the 111th District Court before Judge Jose Maldonado.
In addition to the murder charge, a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison, Roberto Alfonso Solis also faces a charge of engaging in organized criminal activity, a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison.
Solis pleaded not guilty to both charges during a June 17 arraignment hearing. The court set jury selection for Nov. 16 and postponed a ruling on the defense’s motion to reduce bond.
Background
Solis, along with four other people, was arrested in connection with a murder case dating back to May 2024 in which a man was fatally shot in the head, according to the Laredo Police Department.
Authorities identified the suspects as Roberto Alfonso Solis, Jose Orlando Turrubiates, Zelina Renea Solis, Christian Salinas and Yvonne Azeneth Garcia.
All five were accused of the shooting death of Joaquin del Valle-Gonzalez, 36. Each was charged with murder and engaging in organized criminal activity, both first-degree felonies.
The shooting occurred at about 5:30 p.m. May 5, 2024, in the 6500 block of Springfield Avenue.
Officers responding to the scene found del Valle-Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to the head.
He was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he died May 14.
Investigators with the Laredo Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit later obtained arrest warrants for Roberto Alfonso Solis, Jose Orlando Turrubiates, Zelina Renea Solis, Christian Salinas and Yvonne Azeneth Garcia.
“In general, these individuals were known to each other. Criminal actors engaged with one another, which led to the murder of the victim,” the Laredo Police Department said in a statement.
Del Valle-Gonzalez’s death marked the city’s second homicide of 2024.
