A man was arrested on smuggling charges in connection with Tuesday’s fatal auto-pedestrian crash in south Laredo linked to a burglary, according to the Laredo Police Department.
Mark Anthony Sanchez, 20, was arrested Tuesday night.
Jail records show Sanchez was charged with smuggling of persons: serious bodily injury or death, a first-degree felony, and smuggling of persons, a third-degree felony.
He remained held as of Wednesday afternoon on bonds totaling $100,000.
The charges stem from a fatal incident reported Tuesday morning near the 2400 block of Cross Street.
A 31-year-old Hispanic man jumped from a moving truck before suffering fatal injuries, police said. The incident was later linked to a reported burglary in the 500 block of Pitaya Drive.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victim and another man at the Pitaya Drive home were immigrants who had allegedly entered the country illegally, according to police.
An autopsy will determine whether the man was struck by the truck or whether the fatal injuries were sustained in the fall, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests and charges may be pending.
