The Laredo Police Department administered its written entrance exam Wednesday morning at Sames Auto Arena.
A total of 365 applicants took the exam, according to an LPD spokesperson.
The written entrance exam is one of the initial steps in LPD’s hiring process for police officers.
Applicants who score at least 70% on the written exam advance to a physical fitness test before completing a background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, oral board interview and medical examination.
Earlier this year, Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez said LPD expected to lose about 18 officers to retirements and departures to other law enforcement agencies.
To help bolster staffing, LPD announced it would increase the number of entrance exams from two to three each year and expand recruiting efforts outside Webb County.
The starting salary for recruits entering the police academy is $56,992 annually, according to the city’s job posting.
