A man was killed early Tuesday while riding a tricycle on a rural stretch of Avenue 120, southeast of Visalia in Tulare County.

According to California Highway Patrol, the man was riding west “within the traffic lane, during the hours of darkness and without any safety or reflective equipment” when he was hit from behind by a pickup truck.

The rider was thrown from the tricycle and pronounced dead by responding emergency personnel. His identity has yet to be released by the coroner, but he was described by CHP as being in his 50s.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and cooperated with the investigation. It is not believed that alcohol and drugs were a factor in the collision, CHP said, though an official cause is still under investigation.
