When Liam Neeson's Taken was first released, it was a hit with general moviegoers, but with it only having a PG-13 rating, it had a harder time winning over devout action aficionados, as it wasn't able to convey the intense violence of some of its peers. Even with those content restraints, the concept of a former CIA Agent rescuing his kidnapped daughter left an impact on us, as we got not just two sequels to that original movie, but it even inspired a two-season TV series. The movie undeniably worked because of Neeson's screen presence and intensity, despite him being more known for his dramatic work at the time.
In addition to kicking off a franchise of its own, Taken helped open an entirely new genre for Neeson, as his dramatic talents and formidable physicality resulted in him becoming a go-to name in the action world. After Taken, we saw him in titles like The Grey, Non-Stop, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Run All Night, The Commuter, Cold Pursuit, and still many more. Regardless of how distinguished his career was before Taken, an entire generation of audiences mainly knows Neeson as an action thriller icon.
Continuing his trend of action thrillers, we have a new trailer for his latest, The Fix. While other movies fully allow him to show off his hand-to-hand abilities, The Fix is putting a slightly different spin on what we normally get from Neeson. You can watch the trailer below.
Inaugural Entertainment describes the new film, "The Fix follows a group of war-torn CIA operators mentored by Larry (Liam Neeson) and led by Tucker (Zachary Levi) who, after their mission in Afghanistan goes tragically wrong, enter the heart of Tehran to earn redemption by pulling off a daring rescue. The Fix is anchored by a powerhouse trio: Zachary Levi, Liam Neeson, and Quincy Isaiah. They are backed by an exceptional ensemble featuring Wes Chatham, Jake Choi, Augusto Aguilera, Navid Negahban, Elnaaz Norouzi, Grant Harvey, Lara Wolf, Annet Mahendru, and Titus Welliver."
As you can see from this trailer, Neeson doesn't appear to be the one getting his hands dirty, as we fail to even catch a glimpse of him wielding any weapons. Instead, it's Levi's Tucker who seems to be taking orders from Neeson's character, though the motives behind those directives seem to be questionable.
Another thing we can deduce from this trailer is that it likely isn't the straightforward action thriller we were fully expecting. While there are the more obvious tropes of the genre, we see glimpses of double-crosses, emotional trauma, heists, and even some political commentary. Director Guy Moshe, who co-wrote the script with Mark Bacci and Ron Hutchinson, previously teased those layers to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Fix was born from a longstanding desire of mine to put audiences inside the chaos and moral weight of war, not just the action of it ... Working with an ensemble cast that was entirely committed to our cause, led by Liam and Zac, who set the tone, allowed me to push the story into deeply human territory while still delivering the visceral, large-scale filmmaking this genre demands."
The Fix is set to hit theaters on Sep. 11.
