In September 2007, a sitcom premiered on CBS that was intelligent and also heartwarming. It followed a group of friends, most of whom worked in the field of science, and their charming neighbor. It was a big hit, aired for 12 seasons, and had an emotional series finale. It even led to a successful spin-off about a younger version of its most famous character, which is not that easy to do.
The Big Bang Theory is so beloved because it's about characters who are always themselves, even if others think that loving science is nerdy. I'll admit that I always preferred English and art to science and math classes, but now I find science to be fascinating. I enjoyed tuning in to see what Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his pals were up to and to hear their passion for the subject. That's why I'm excited about the upcoming spin-off series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which stars Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom. Now that it's almost here and we're rewatching the best TBBT episodes featuring Stuart while we wait, let's talk about when we can watch the spin-off.
'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' Season 1 Release Schedule, Explained
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Then, the spin-off series will follow a weekly release schedule. Season 1 will have 10 episodes, and the finale will stream on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026. But let's not think about that. Not only is it sad to imagine this fun spin-off's first season being over, but who wants to imagine that summer is over, too? Let's hold off on the pumpkin spice lattes for at least another month.
Since Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 only has 10 episodes, and they're not very long, it might be surprising that they're not being released at once. Imagine how much fun it would be to binge-watch a full season of TV about Stuart Bloom, who owns a comic book store and is now caught up in a fascinating situation. But considering that The Big Bang Theory was a traditional sitcom that aired on a network, it's nice that viewers who loved the original can enjoy this new story via a weekly release model. Rather than watching it in one evening and then being upset that there are no more episodes (a typical TV fan issue), we can enjoy Stuart's wild experiences and know that more sci-fun comedy entertainment is coming next Thursday.
As the title suggests, the spin-off follows Stuart as he creates "a multiverse Armageddon." How? Well, he ruins one of Sheldon and Leonard's (Johnny Galecki) inventions. Even though the series isn't about those two beloved characters, it's nice to know that they're still involved, at least in spirit. Other characters include Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), Denise (Lauren Lapkus), and Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn).
Young Sheldon is considered one of the most compelling TV spin-offs, and I think that's because every spin-off should do one of two things: tell a prequel story or focus on a quirky character. If viewers were excited to watch a childhood version of Sheldon Cooper, I bet just as many will be curious about what happens to Stuart. He's the right choice as he was a staple of The Big Bang Theory, but he also has a mysterious vibe that could be explored more deeply.
Back to the length of the episodes... According to Deadline, the episodes are all under 25 minutes. While one is at the 25-minute mark, some episodes are 24, 22, 21, and 20 minutes. Four episodes are 18 minutes, and one episode is only 15 minutes. Considering that some streaming series have 60-minute episodes (and some are even longer), this is fascinating. Chuck Lorre told Deadline:
"We just felt that we’d successfully told the story, and to add would be padding, and padding, generally, is a hammock between important scenes."
Based on the silly, quirky, and sweet tone of the trailer, when Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 is over, I'm sure we'll all agree that it was a great ride. And then it will be appropriate to think about pumpkin spice lattes.
