12 Years Later, Sequel to a $23.3M Cult Horror Hit Finally Moves Forward With New Cast

The long-gestating horror sequel gets a major update.

At long last, the official sequel to the horror hit It Follows has started production. While Maika Monroe returns after starring in the original, she'll be joined in They Follow by several new co-stars who have now been revealed.

Deadline reports that They Follow will also star Jackie Earle Haley (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Justine Lupe (Succession), Anna Mirodin (Ivan), Jayne Taini (Unbelievable), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Tom Pecinka (Stereophonic), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Ben Krieger (Song Sung Blue), Natalie Shinnick (The Brutalist), and Jan Hoag (The Fabelmans). Additionally, it's been confirmed that Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice) has officially signed on as well, following previous reports that she was in talks to join the sequel.

It Follows 2 Is Finally Seeing the Light of Day

David Robert Mitchell is back in the director's chair for They Follow after writing and directing the first film. As of now, no plot details about They Follow have been shared, but what's known is that it will take place a decade after what happened in It Follows. In real-world time, 12 years have passed since It Follows had its world premiere at Cannes. There have long been reports about a sequel happening, but now the project is finally moving ahead.

Along with writing and directing They Follow, Mitchell is also serving as a producer. Other producers on the project include Harvest Hill Entertainment's Jake Weiner; Good Fear Content's Chris Bender; Northern Light Media Ventures' Erik Rommesmo; FirstGen Content's Mike D'Alto and Randal Sandler; Curious Gremlin's Scott Aharoni and Sinan Eczacıbaşı; and Kaplan Morrison's David Kaplan, Rebecca Green, and Lauren Smith.

It Follows Was a Big Hit Upon Release

Released at Cannes in 2014 before its wide release in 2015, It Follows starred Maika Monroe as Jay Height, a young woman who is afflicted with a curse after hooking up with a new boyfriend. She begins being stalked by an unknown entity which can take the appearance of any person, and only the victim can see it. If it reaches the cursed person, it kills them very brutally. The only way to delay the curse is to pass it on to someone else through sex, but if that new victim dies, the entity reverts back to following the previous person in the chain.

It Follows was a major hit upon release. It wound up grossing over $23 million against a budget closer to $1 million. The horror feature was also very highly acclaimed. It holds a near-perfect score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics calling it one of the best horror releases of its era. Making a sequel subsequently seemed like a no-brainer, but scheduling and other issues have served as roadblocks until the ball was finally able to start rolling this year.

They Follow does not yet have a set release date.
