Lauren Cohan is returning as Maggie Rhee when "The Walking Dead: Dead City" premieres its third season Sunday, July 26, at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+. With the premiere only days away, renewed interest in Cohan is building as fans prepare for the next chapter of Maggie and Negan's complicated alliance.
Cohan once again stars opposite Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, Maggie's former enemy and reluctant partner. AMC has also confirmed the return of Jimmi Simpson, Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Logan Kim and Michael Emery.
Season 3 marks a significant change for its two central characters. After years of hostility, Maggie and Negan finally attempt to put their differences aside and establish what AMC describes as the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse.
Their plans quickly come under threat, however.
"When chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?" AMC said in its official synopsis.
Cohan told Variety that the new episodes represent an emotional turning point for Maggie, whose life has long been shaped by grief and the murder of her husband, Glenn, at Negan's hands.
"This is really the first year when Maggie recognizes that to be defined by grief doesn't serve her anymore," Cohan said.
Morgan was equally enthusiastic about the coming season, calling it "our best season — by far." He also joked about the pair's less combative relationship, saying, "She didn't even stab me one time!"
"Dead City," a spinoff of AMC's original "The Walking Dead," initially followed Maggie and Negan into a walker-infested Manhattan to rescue Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel. Cohan first appeared as Maggie in the flagship series in 2011 and has since become one of the longest-serving performers in the franchise.
The first two episodes of Season 3 were screened at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June, giving attendees an early look at the characters' new dynamic. AMC then released the official trailer on June 10, showing Maggie and Negan assembling a group of survivors in an effort to rebuild Manhattan.
The network will also promote the season at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24 with a Hall H panel featuring Cohan, Morgan and other members of the cast and creative team. An advance fan screening of the premiere is scheduled to follow later that evening.
