It turns out, audiences haven't seen all "the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows" of Riverdale. Disney+ has just announced a follow-up series based on the Archie Comics characters.
Disney+ Commits to Afterlife with Archie
Variety reports that Disney+ has ordered a series adaptation of the Afterlife With Archie comics. The update comes nine months after the project was first reported to be in development. The streamer is eyeing a Halloween 2027 launch for the horror-tinged show.
The logline for Afterlife with Archie reads, "When a supernatural spell from a certain teen-witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, Archie and his friends must fight to stay alive, testing the friendships, romances, and loyalties that have always held them together."
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script for Afterlife with Archie and will serve as an executive producer. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, among others, are also set to executive produce.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti previously collaborated on Riverdale, a dark reimagining of the Archie comics that lasted for seven seasons on The CW. It made stars of its young cast, such as Camila Mendes, who recently appeared in Amazon's big-budget reboot of Masters of the Universe.
"Afterlife With Archie has always been about more than just zombies — it’s about the friendships, loyalty and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. "Roberto, Greg, Sarah and Jon have such a deep appreciation for these characters, and they’ve built something that’s equal parts thrilling and heartfelt. Fans are going to fall hard for this new version of the gang … and maybe scream a little too."
Archie Comics Is Also Reviving the Original Comic Series
Afterlife with Archie is based on the comic book series of the same name by Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla. The comic was Archie Comics' first title not to be aimed at children. It was a resounding success, with the first eight issues selling out.
Unfortunately, the success of Afterlife with Archie was a double-edged sword. Aguirre-Sacasa was quickly promoted to chief creative officer for Archie Comics. Soon after, he became attached as developer and showrunner of Riverdale.
All of these developments meant that new issues of Afterlife with Archie were released farther and farther apart. In 2016, the tenth issue was released. While at least two more issues were planned, they have not been released yet, with the series going on an unofficial hiatus that has lasted to this day.
However, in October 2025, following the original report for Afterlife with Archie, Aguirre-Sacasa announced on Instagram that he was "resurrecting the OG comic book that truly started it all" with Francavilla. "Issues 11 and 12 have been written, I’m plotting 13 even as we speak, and Francesco’s already drawing," he added.
At this time, it's unclear when Afterlife with Archie will return with Issue No. 11. Archie Comics may hold off on its publication until next year, to time it around the release of the Disney+ show, but that's just speculation.
Until Afterlife with Archie premieres, audiences can revisit all seven seasons of Riverdale on Netflix.
