A beloved Dublin pub has pulled its final pint after 41 years, with customers describing the closure as the ‘end of an era’.
The Speaker Conolly in Firhouse served its last customers this week before shutting to make way for a transformation of the site.
A favourite among locals, the pub has been a fixture in the community for over four decades, hosting live music, serving food and running regular bingo, quiz and poker nights.
Announcing the closure on social media, the owners thanked customers, staff and neighbours for their support over the years.
‘After 41 wonderful years, it’s time to turn the page on an incredible chapter,’ the statement began.
‘We would like to sincerely thank every customer, friend, neighbour and staff member who has supported The Speaker Conolly over the past 41 years.
‘Your loyalty, laughter, celebrations and memories have made The Speaker a true community landmark and a place we have been proud to call home.’
While the closure marks the end of an era, the owners stressed it is only temporary.
‘As we temporarily close our doors, we do so with immense gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead,’ they said.
‘The site will be redeveloped and transformed, and we look forward to welcoming you back to a brand-new public house, designed to serve the community for generations to come.
‘While this chapter is ending, the story of The Speaker is far from over.
‘Thank you for being part of our journey. We can’t wait to raise a glass with you again in the future.’
The announcement was met with an outpouring of support from customers, many of whom shared their memories of the popular south Dublin pub.
One person wrote: ‘Can’t wait to see the upgrade, good luck.’
Another added: ‘End of an era. Best of luck with it.’
