Tyson Fury has called out David Beckham and modern athletes as he prepares to fight in front of 1,500 people in Thailand.
The former Heavyweight Champion of the World is preparing for his titanic clash with Anthony Joshua, who also returns to the ring this week, as he fights 46-year-old Polish bruiser Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand.
The event will take place this Friday in front of just 1,500 people in Thailand, and won’t be available for live broadcast, with the plan for the fight to be a part of the upcoming season of Fury’s Netflix reality show ‘At Home with the Furys’.
Meanwhile, Joshua will face Albanian Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in an event coinciding with the third annual eSports World Cup. When asked why he chose to fight in front of such a small crowd, Fury took aim at modern athletes for having too large egos.
‘Which other world champion on my level – a high-level athlete on earth – would do a performance in front of 1,500 in Pattaya? Do you think David Beckham would play professional football here, or someone famous like that? No way. They’re just not going to do it.
‘A lot of these big celebrities and sports stars think they’re bigger than they actually are.’
Fury was then queried on the quality of his opponent Wach, who has a record of 39-13 and has lost 7 out of his last 10 fights, including a defeat by unanimous decision to Tyson Fury’s first cousin Hughie Fury.
‘Let me tell you, Mariusz Wach would put his fist through Joshua’s opponent, whoever he is,’ Fury said. ‘This man would knock him spark out. He’s a real fighting man. We’re not interested in other people. This is my show.’
‘I’m not interested in what’s going on elsewhere with Joshua or [Deontay] Wilder or [Oleksandr] Usyk or anybody. This is about me and Mariusz, not about anybody else. What happens beyond Friday is none of my concern. What will be will be.’
