The Minnesota Vikings have yet to find an answer to their main dilemma for training camp, and Justin Jefferson is not taking the quarterback contest as already determined.
Although there are many who believe the veteran Kyler Murray will take the starting position, Jefferson believes that a fair competition lies ahead of him. In his opinion, the quarterbacks need to prove themselves to earn the coaches’ trust.
Justin Jefferson Sees Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Battle Pushing Both Passers
Jefferson did not offer a prediction when asked about the competition. Except, he explained why he believes the battle could end up bringing out the best in both quarterbacks for different reasons.
“For JJ, to get that competition in that room, for him to step up his game a little bit, and have to just be that dog… For K1… we know he’s a playmaker, it’s just all about coming to this team with that leadership role that we really need to fill in.”
For JJ McCarthy, it is about responding to pressure. The former first-round pick enters another pivotal season knowing every practice rep matters. Rather than viewing the arrival of Murray as a setback, Jefferson suggested the competition should force McCarthy to elevate his game and show he can handle the demands of leading an NFL offense.
Murray’s challenge is different. Nobody questions what the veteran can do with the football in his hands. After eight NFL seasons, his playmaking ability is already established.
That is also why the Vikings haven’t rushed the decision. HC Kevin O’Connell has repeatedly maintained that the starting job will be earned on the field instead of being handed to either quarterback before camp. Jefferson’s comments echoed that same message, making it clear he expects the competition to stay open until one player separates himself.
Whoever wins the job will inherit one of the league’s best offensive supporting casts. The 27-year-old remains the centerpiece after another 1,000-yard season, while T.J. Hockenson gives Minnesota a reliable target over the middle.
For now, though,Jefferson is not interested in campaigning for one side. He’d rather let training camp settle the debate naturally.
