Jelly Roll has released an emotional music video for his new single “Hands Up.”
On July 17, The country singer shared the visual piece to his autobiographical song on Youtube. Within the nearly 7-minute clip, he visits San Francisco’s San Quentin Rehabilitation Center to pray and perform for the inmates.
Opening up about the experience on his Instagram, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, described it as “one of the most special things I’ve ever had the opportunity to do.
“The moment my life truly changed is when I threw my hands up,” he continued. “I know a lot of folks will hear this and remember their ‘hands up’ moment as well and that is making this that much cooler for me.”
Jelly Roll recalled being “in the same kind of place” as the incarcerated men in the video.
The singer has been open about spending time behind bars, with his first sentence served at 14 years old due to drug charges.
“I’ve made a lot of peace with my past. I mean, it still haunts me like the ghosts I know, but I tell you what, I don’t think about doing no drugs today,” he told People in 2023.
Jelly Roll has explicitly credited his now ex-wife Bunnie Xo for inspiring his recovery.
The two finalized their divorce on July 17, two months after the Save Me singer filed for divorce in Williamson County, Tennessee. Within the court records, the two split due to irreconcilable differences.
Despite their split, Bunnie still calls the country star her “best friend,” describing their decade together as the “coolest time of my life” in a since-deleted podcast episode.
Jelly Roll and Bunnie first met backstage at a concert in August 2015. Their connection hadn’t turned romantic until the following summer. The two had only been dating for a month before they got married in Las Vegas.
