The new mom was so proud!

Motherhood doesn't always go according to plan, and this sweet mama duck is proof. What the Cluck, a homesteader in southern Minnesota, has a duck who had been patiently sitting on a nest of eggs, waiting for them to hatch. When the first one finally did, she was instantly smitten, but there was just one tiny surprise: it wasn't a duckling.

Somehow, without anyone realizing it, she'd incubated and hatched a chicken egg. The little chick didn't seem to mind one bit, and neither did the new mom. Even after everyone realized the mix-up, the mama duck had no intention of giving her baby back, creating an adorable cross-species parenting moment that's melting hearts across the internet.

What the Cluck shared more in the caption: "Now what!?! Our momma Rouen duck, who has been sitting on a nest (for weeks) piled with eggs that we thought were all duck eggs, has successfully hatched... a baby chick!

I’m hoping she hatches another for company. For now, momma duck is keeping it warm, and we put food and water in with them, but we are kinda stumped even though we know this happens sometimes."

Cute Reactions to the Mama Duck and Her Chick

Like us, everybody loved watching the mama duck fawn over her new baby. @apoloniaricci said what we were all thinking: "I can’t; she’s sooo happy—the chicken will learn to swim... It will be fine!"

@Tracy agreed, adding, "I have learned from this app that any bird can raise any other bird. It’s all good."

Commenter @Mrs Carver suggested, "Name it Chuck (chicken-duck)," and while it's a cute suggestion, they ended up naming the little one Ducky.

What the Cluck posted an update video 10 days later of Ducky and the baby ducks playing in the water and shared, "Ducky the Chicken can’t quite understand why its siblings are so obsessed with water!"

We can't wait to watch them all grow up!
