A lot of Dachshunds may be small, but many seem completely unaware of that fact.
Give one a backyard, a mission, and a little too much confidence, and suddenly you have a tiny hunter standing at the back door with a "gift" nobody wants.
That is exactly where this video begins.
A very proud Dachshund appears outside, holding a squirrel in his mouth. He looks less like a dog who has caused a problem and more like someone waiting for a medal.
His mom immediately notices how pleased he is with himself.
She also has one request.
Please let it go.
The contrast is what makes this so funny to me. This little dog is standing there like he's completed the most important assignment of his life, while Mom is trying to figure out how to accept this gesture without accepting the actual squirrel.
There is no shame on his face.
No uncertainty.
Just pride.
One person in the comments pointed out that the squirrel looked bigger than the Dachshund, which only makes the achievement seem more impressive from his perspective. He may have short legs, but apparently, his confidence has no height limit.
Another commenter shared a much more traumatic version of the same Dachshund behavior, explaining that their dog once brought home one of their baby chicks. 😥
Anyone who lives with a determined little hunting dog knows the instincts can be very real.
Still, it's hard not to laugh at the way this little hunter presents himself.
He looks like he expects Mom to say, "Wonderful work. Please bring that one directly into the living room."
Instead, she is negotiating from behind the door.
There's something deeply Dachshund about the entire scene. Tiny body. Huge mission. Absolutely no interest in whether the rest of the household approved the plan.
The squirrel may have been the surprise, but the expression is the real star. That face says he didn't simply find something. He accomplished something.
And now he would like proper recognition.
Why Do Dogs Bring Us Gifts?
Dogs may bring you toys, socks, sticks, or other unexpected items for several reasons. Some are showing excitement. Some want attention. Others may be following natural carrying, retrieving, or hunting instincts.
When the "gift" involves wildlife, though, it helps to stay calm and focus on safety.
- Don't chase or grab immediately. Chasing can turn the moment into a game or make your dog hold on tighter.
- Check the animal from a safe distance. Avoid handling wildlife barehanded and contact a wildlife rehabilitator.
- Give your dog safer things to carry. Toys, supervised fetch, scent games, and backyard enrichment can give those busy instincts somewhere to land.
This Dachshund may believe he brought home the prize of the century.
Mom, however, was probably hoping for a stick.
