The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition may not end when the coaching staff names a Week 1 starter. If anything, that is when the real evaluation begins.

That’s part of the Arizona Cardinals handling of Kyler Murray whose last season has become an interesting point of reference. Rather than sticking with its original plan, the Cardinals changed course early after deciding the consistency they expected never arrived.

Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray Decision Offers Minnesota Vikings A Different Quarterback Blueprint

Speaking on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Cardinals insider Bo Brack explained that the Cardinals entered the 2025 season believing Murray could steady the offense after an encouraging offseason.

“The team felt like he could find some sort of consistency going into last year… when they didn’t see that through the first five weeks, they were QUICK to pivot off of Kyler.”

The comments are not a prediction for the Vikings, except that they do highlight how quickly teams are now willing to reassess the QB position. That reality could loom over the Vikings as Murray and J.J. McCarthy continue battling for the starting job. Neither QB has officially separated himself heading into training camp, leaving HC Kevin O’Connell with one of the league’s most closely watched position battles.

Minnesota has consistently maintained that the competition will play out on the field, and recent comments from around the organization suggest both QBs remain firmly in the mix. Justin Jefferson recently described the battle as a positive challenge for both players, saying McCarthy has the opportunity to “be that dog,” while Murray brings the experience and leadership expected from a veteran who has already been through high-pressure NFL seasons.

The Cardinals experience serves as a reminder that QB decisions don’t always follow the timeline teams envision during the offseason. They believed the 28-year-old could rediscover the consistency that once made him a franchise centerpiece, but five games proved enough for the organization to rethink its plan.

Whether the Vikings reach a similar crossroads remains to be seen. However, with two QBs pushing for the same job, the Vikings may ultimately find that naming a starter is only the beginning of the decision, not the end.
