The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping for the offense to take a step forward after a middling 2025 season. After the team was 21st in the NFL with 21.3 points per game scored, they are hoping that things will head in the right direction for the future. There is a star who could be in the NFL MVP conversation for the team in the 2026 season. Let’s take a look at who one outlet believes it can be.
Kenneth Walker III named as Kansas City Chiefs’ non-QB MVP candidate
NFL’s Kevin Patra wrote an article highlighting each AFC team’s most likely non-QB MVP. For the Kansas City Chiefs, he chose new acquisition running back Kenneth Walker III.
“The Chiefs signed the Super Bowl MVP, an acknowledgement that their ground game hasn’t been good enough. Kansas City hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Kareem Hunt in 2017 — i.e., before Patrick Mahomes took over the starting gig. The last few seasons have been particularly inefficient on the ground. Walker provides slashing ability and a big-play threat that opponents must respect. The world expects Mahomes not to miss a beat, but he’s 30 and coming off a season-ending knee injury. There is a level of unknown. Walker’s consistent rushing attack should provide the star QB some aid until the passing game gets on track — something that’s been a concern in recent campaigns even when the two-time MVP was healthy.”
Walker has run for at least 1,000 yards in two of his four seasons in the league. Last season, he played in all 17 games for the first time in his career and recorded 221 rushing attempts for 1,027 yards (4.6 yards per carry) with five rushing touchdowns as well as 31 receptions on 36 targets for 282 yards (7.6 yards per catch) without a touchdown reception. With the Kansas City Chiefs having more dependency on the running game as quarterback Patrick Mahomes returns from a torn ACL, this should open up the offense.
It will be interesting to see how offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and coach Andy Reid look to get the Kansas City Chiefs offense going with a legitimate running back.
