Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has done a good job of hiring a talented staff. He has seen multiple coaches get hired away for promotions, and the next one could be his quarterbacks coach, Josh McCown,
The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue highlighted an assistant coach on every team who could break out, and it’s no surprise that it was McCown for the Vikings.
“McCown is another assistant coach who drew some buzz at the league meetings, and there will be a lot of scrutiny on him this season with veteran free-agent addition Kyler Murray now on the roster alongside third-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. That could easily shift to interest, and then excitement, should Murray play as well as many are expecting him to under McCown, coach Kevin O'Connell and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips.”
Josh McCown could get more head coaching interviews
It’s not a secret that McCown has been viewed highly across the league for a long time. There were rumors about him potentially getting the Houston Texans job without having to spend a single season as an assistant coach, but they got “bullied” out of that.
He’s received other interviews, but has declined opportunities to take offensive coordinator jobs. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get more head coaching interviews, but there is an interesting element to the discussion: the failures of J.J. McCarthy.
With McCarthy’s mechanics having been all over the place last year, along with the Vikings trying hard to fix things during the year, a lot of the onus goes to McCown, despite head coach Kevin O’Connell being dubbed the “quarterback whisperer.”
Rodrigue is right that McCown is going to be under the microscope with how things will go down this year with either Kyler Murray or McCarthy as the starting quarterback. If they go well, don’t be surprised if he’s a head coach. If not, we could be having a much different conversation.
