With training camp just around the corner, there is one Browns insider who is finding the storyline to be even more frustrating than everything else. Rather than questioning Sanders’ talent, he believes the discussion surrounding the quarterback has taken on a life of its own.
Tony Grossi Addresses Cleveland Browns’ Shedeur Sanders Narrative
During an appearance on ESPN Cleveland, the longtime Browns reporter Tony Grossi was asked about the Cleveland sports storyline he has grown tired of. His answer centered on the ongoing conversation portraying Sanders as someone who has been unfairly treated throughout his young NFL career.
“You’re not gonna like this, the ‘Shedeur is a victim’ storyline, that he hasn’t been given his chance.”
It is evident that Grossi was not criticizing Sanders. Rather, it is his way of showing annoyance towards the media narrative surrounding the ex-Colorado signal caller since his joining of the NFL.
The criticism is expected. This is due to the fact that Sanders joined the NFL with high expectations after sliding in the draft to the fifth round in which the Browns picked him with the 144th overall pick. His first NFL season has been quite dramatic as his performances have had various ups and downs since getting injured and some roster changes gave him a chance to start in seven games.
Sanders has shown enough talent to keep him in the Browns’ starting QB race in the long run. He has passed for 56.6% with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for 1,400 yards as he helped the Browns in securing three wins in his seven starts.
HC Todd Monken has also praised Sanders’ progress since the end of the season, indicating that the second-year quarterback has improved a lot over the offseason period.
This indicates an organization that wants to develop its players regardless of outside views. Throughout the offseason, the QB has consistently discussed improving his mindset, building chemistry with teammates and preparing for competition instead of questioning his role.
