Superhero fatigue has been a term used ad nauseam and for good reason. There is no question that Marvel has oversaturated the market when it comes to big-budget films. Despite all this, even when yearning for original content is at an all-time high, the Russo Brothers still show that they can bring it home. Avengers: Doomsday has been teased for quite some time, and if the trailer is any indication, it may be worth the wait.
After the Kang debacle, it seems that casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom was the Hail Mary that the project needed. Avengers: Doomsday is bringing together all types of ensembles, including the Black Panther team, Fantastic Four, and New Avengers. Finally, fans even get to see Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) back in action. As exciting as this new venture is, however, it isn’t flawless, as these cases rarely are. The weak link comes in the form of the Marvel ensemble that fans have been waiting for years to come to fruition. The X-Men come right out of the gate swinging in the new Avengers trailer, but it isn’t nearly enough.
Marvel Fans Deserve Their Promised ‘X-Men’ Film
The Avengers: Doomsday trailer is fuel for the nostalgia fire. Not only is Robert Downey Jr. returning as the iconic Doctor Doom, but the movie will feature the return of some of the most beloved characters in Marvel canon. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto, respectively, while other X-Men characters such as Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Gambit (Channing Tatum) also return to the big screen.
Regrettably, this is just a reminder of what fans are still missing out on. If there is one ensemble out there that has not gotten their due in the current run of Marvel characters, it’s the X-Men. The MCU has still not brought the team of mutants to the big screen, and these appearances are just reminders of what fans really want from Marvel.
To be fair to Marvel, it is a joy to see Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in a leadership role and not the crux of a joke. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) deserves all the screen time Marvel is willing to give her, and Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers has been highly anticipated. Even so, these are characters and familiar storylines that have been played out more than once. If Marvel wants to move forward in an exciting and interesting way, the answer is obvious.
The movie that fans have been waiting for is the X-Men feature film that has still not materialized. The last time that viewers saw the team in full force was during the Fox era of filmmaking. Movies like Doomsday, Deadpool vs. Wolverine, and even The Marvels hint at the X-Men, but at this point, it has become tiresome. Fans have been waiting a long time to see what the MCU has up their sleeve, and Doomsday is just another vehicle that is giving viewers crumbs.
Hopefully, this is the last time Marvel will dangle the prospect of X-Men without fully delivering. With the success of X-Men ‘97, it's obvious that one of the comics’ early teams is needed now more than ever. Doomsday is obviously paying homage to what fans loved about the franchise for so long, but it is time to finally deliver Marvel's best ensemble team.
