'The Odyssey' Has Demolished 2026's Biggest Flop in Just One Weekend

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has demolished box office records in just one weekend, more than doubling the total haul of 2026's biggest flop.

Considered the most-anticipated film of 2026 by many, the time for waiting came to an end last week, as the curtain fell and audiences around the world witnessed Christopher Nolan's most ambitious film yet, The Odyssey, on the big screen. Whether viewed on IMAX or not, first responses to the film have been almost unanimously positive, with Collider's Perri Nemiroff calling it "a filmmaking feast," Joe Schmidt labeling it an "unrivaled cinematic spectacle" in his review for Collider, and the film's Rotten Tomatoes rating sitting at a near-perfect 95%.

Matt Damon, a man often the bridesmaid in Nolan movies such as Interstellarand Oppenheimer, finally became the bride in The Odyssey, as he headlined the film as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. The rest of the film features a blend of normal Nolan faces and fresh castings, but all major Hollywood stars in their own right. This includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, and many more.

So, this historical adaptation for the ages has earned widespread approval from critics, but how did it fare during its opening box office gambit? Unsurprisingly, Nolan is once again smashing records, as The Odyssey eased to more than $260 million in global revenue in just a couple of days. Split between a $124.5 million domestic haul and a further $139.5 million from overseas markets, this total is enough to help the film become the biggest R-rated debut of 2026, Nolan's highest global opening yet, and Universal's largest R-rated launch in history.

'The Odyssey' Has Already Demolished a Major 2026 Flop

In just one weekend, The Odyssey has more than doubled the total box office haul of Supergirl, one of 2026's biggest flops that has only made $120 million from a reported $170 million so far. The second installment of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, which starred Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, is an unmitigated disaster, especially when considering the huge success of 2025's predecessor, Superman. The Odyssey's epic journey through the box office is only just beginning, whereas Supergirl's had ended before it ever truly got going.

Both The Odyssey andSupergirl are available in theaters. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more box office stories.
