ESPN’s Adam Schefter kept it 100 about the Miami Heat’s LeBron James press conference mistake. For the veteran journalist, the Heat’s massive premature announcement is most likely not a coincidence.
Schefter also revealed an interesting text message he had received after James announced he wouldn’t be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers; he said, per 97.5 The Fanatic.
“Without knowing a single thing, literally, I just heard about it. I haven’t read anything about. I haven’t spoken to anybody, but my guess would be: where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Schefter said.

Adam Schefter added that following LeBron James’ exit from the Los Angeles Lakers, he received a text message preparing him to watch LeBron James return to the Heat for the 2026-27 season.
Schefter isn’t the only analyst leaning toward the Heat winning the LeBron sweepstakes, as Fox Sports 1’s Nick Wright believes the same, he said, per First Things First.
“I also think he’s going to end up in Miami. I’m starting to think that is his best chance for a 5th ring. I don’t think he’s playing only one year.. the upside of Giannis, Kenny Atkinson vs Erik Spoelstra is a big gulf”
If James does wind up returning to Miami, ESPN’s Stephen A Smith believes the Heat, who traded for All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo, would immediately turn into a top-4 team in the Eastern Conference.
“I think if he goes to Miami, they’re a top 4 team in the Eastern Conference, and assuming Pat Riley and those boys are able to fill their roster, which I have no doubt they can do, they’ll be a championship favorite”
While most see a James-Antetokounmpo tandem as an intriguing foundation for a team to build their roster around, not everyone is convinced they’d be instant contenders.
Rich Paul’s love for Pat Riley amid LeBron James’ free agency
NBA agent Rich Paul talked about Pat Riley’s impact ahead of LeBron James’ decision amid free agency.
Paul expressed the respect he had for Heat’s Pat Riley, per The Game Over Podcast.
“I have a profound respect for Pat Riley. The guy has been in the basketball ecosystem more than double my age. There’s so much wisdom that comes with Pat. We sat there at a game and talked to him. I couldn’t have cared less about the game that was being played. It was great.”
For some, this is a clear sign of Paul, James’ agent, winking to the rest of the Heat organization, as most believe LeBron will make his announcement soon.
