The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. Although his rookie season was underwhelming, largely due to missing over half of the campaign with a torn LCL in his right knee, the future remains incredibly bright for the ex-Colorado Buffalo star. On Wednesday, head coach Liam Coen opened up about what makes Hunter such a special player.
While talking with ESPN’s Peter Schrager, Coen revealed why the Jaguars drafted the 23-year-old two-way star to begin with. He also explained some of the traits that make Hunter stand out amongst the crowd as a football player.
“[We didn’t draft Hunter] to come in and automatically be our No. 1 receiver and No. 1 corner. There’s an adjustment period for any rookie,” Coen said. “A huge reason why we took him was because of that competitive spirit, because of that confidence that he oozes… He’s special.

“His endurance and ability to just run forever is something pretty cool to see when you watch him practice in July or August in the summer, in the heat,” Coen continued. “And he’s not dying. He’s not, you know, crushed. He’s not sweating. It’s like, dude, what are you made of? He’s just built that way. And I do, we love his competitive spirit and character.”
The Jaguars certainly hope that Hunter’s unique athletic traits will carry over to Sunday’s next season. While there has been speculation he may play more defense than offense next year, Travis Hunter is still listed as a wide receiver on the club’s depth chart. So, perhaps his two-way style of play will continue.
Hunter ended the 2025-26 campaign with 28 receptions, 298 yards, and one receiving touchdown as a wideout. Defensively, he recorded 15 combined tackles (11 solo) and three pass deflections. A healthy year should lead to a more productive campaign for Travis Hunter.
