The Miami Heat remain focused on pursuing a reunion with LeBron James, but their ongoing efforts appear to be affecting discussions with another prominent free agent.
According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang, Miami has not made any commitments to DeMar DeRozan as the organization continues monitoring James’ free agency decision.
“And though at least some Heat interest in DeRozan would be expected if James bypasses the Heat, Miami as of Monday had made no assurances to DeRozan and hasn’t told him if he will be pursued if James doesn’t join Miami, according to a source.”

The report suggests Miami is keeping its options open while awaiting clarity on James’ future. The four-time NBA champion has remained quiet about where he plans to play during a record-setting 24th season after departing the Los Angeles Lakers.
During Fanatics FanFest NYC last week, James declined to reveal his next destination when Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton attempted to get an answer during a live recording of Mind the Game. James also explained that his motivation for continuing his career stems from his love of competition and his desire to inspire both younger athletes and those from his own generation.
Heat keep DeMar DeRozan in limbo amid LeBron James chase
If James ultimately chooses another destination, DeRozan could become one of Miami’s top remaining targets.
The 36-year-old veteran became a free agent after the Sacramento Kings waived him earlier this month. Despite entering the latter stages of his career, DeRozan remains one of the league’s most productive midrange scorers and a reliable offensive option.
During the 2025-26 season with Sacramento, DeRozan averaged 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 49.7% from the field and 32% from 3-point range across 77 games. He logged 31.2 minutes per contest and continued to serve as one of the Kings’ primary offensive creators.
Miami has been linked to multiple veteran additions this offseason while exploring ways to strengthen its roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Whether DeRozan ultimately becomes part of those plans may depend on how James’ highly anticipated free agency decision unfolds.
