In the bottom of the ninth inning of the Philadelphia Phillies’ Tuesday night clash against the Los Angeles Dodgers, they rallied, with Alec Bohm reaching base on a leadoff single and J.T. Realmuto putting two runners in scoring position with a double with one out and the Phillies down by just one run, 2-1. However, the Phillies had a baserunning snafu after Brandon Marsh hit a ground ball to third base, and the Dodgers turned an odd double play to end the game.
The Dodgers had the infield in, and the best course of action for the Phillies baserunners on any ground ball is to not be too aggressive on the basepaths. Pinch-runner Justin Crawford was caught straying too far away from third and he was caught on a rundown, which opened up the opportunity for Realmuto to advance to third.
Instead, Realmuto got spooked when Crawford decided to return to third on the rundown, and Realmuto, instead of being safe at third, chose to retreat to second. The Dodgers caught both runners, and the game was over right there and then. Suffice to say, this was an inexcusable boneheaded moment for the Phillies catcher, and he owned up to it after the game.

“It was just a bad baserunning play, really. Once Craw gets in the rundown I’m on third base. There’s no reason to go back to second. Just a lack in judgment. Can’t make two outs on that play. Just got to stay in scoring position,” Realmuto said, via Dave Uram of 94WIP.
“Just a lapse in judgment. I thought Craw could get out of the rundown for some reason. Chances of that are so small, you just can’t take a chance there.”
This loss may be as infuriating as it gets for the Phillies, but it’s good to get these errors out of the system before the postseason even comes close.
