Time is running out for the Toronto Blue Jays to make a run, and their current run of games is not helping in their quest to make something of the 2026 season yet. On Tuesday, the Blue Jays fell to 46-55 on the season after suffering a 12-2 demolition at the hands of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays — with starting pitcher Kevin Gausman and the rest of the team’s pitching corps struggling mightily.
Gausman lasted just 3.1 innings on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned runs) during his 21st start of the season. This was not the start Toronto needed against the division leader, and as the losses keep on piling up for them, the more likely it becomes that they become a selling ballclub at the trade deadline.
After the game, the Blue Jays veteran starter was honest about how substandard his team’s performances have been not just in his loss to the Rays, but for the whole season.

“Some bad luck, for sure. Feels like every hard hit ball on our side is right at somebody, and maybe on the other side, not so much. We just haven’t been playing very clean baseball. I think the guys are putting some pressure on themselves in the batter’s box and the pitching in this league is really good. It’s hard,” Gausman said, via Sportsnet.
Indeed, the Blue Jays committed two errors on the night. The typically excellent defensive center fielder Daulton Varsho did not field the ball cleanly which allowed the Rays baserunner to advance to third and catcher Brandon Valenzuela launched a ball to the outfield on a steal attempt from the Rays, which allowed a run to score for Tampa Bay.
And it keeps on getting worse for the Blue Jays, especially with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being mired in a season-long slump. (He went 0-4 yet again on the night.)
While their postseason hopes aren’t fully dashed quite yet, it’s becoming more and more unlikely for the Blue Jays to come back from this predicament as they continue to play subpar baseball on all fronts.
