The Los Angeles Lakers have undergone major change and will line up with a vastly different lineup next season. The first domino to fall was obviously LeBron James’ decision to play for a new team for the start of the new campaign, and it has led to a huge shakeup that saw Rob Pelinka and co. make a number of new acquisitions who can be expected to play major roles next season.
Among them is Cameron Carr, who the Lakers traded for after the Baylor prospect was drafted 24th overall by the New York Knicks. Carr was then sent to the 2026 NBA Summer League, where he emerged as one of the obvious standouts while playing for a team that was ousted in the semifinals by the Golden State Warriors. And well, there will be plenty of optimism for the 21-year-old, for obvious reasons.

Apart from the lottery and first-round picks, draftees are generally expected to take their time as they ease into the NBA’s physicality and pace. The Summer League obviously does not have the same kind of competition, but it often gives coaches and the front office a fair idea about how well the player might take to the big league immediately.

And well, Carr has been almost a revelation. He appeared in four out of the five games the Lakers played, averaging 18 points, 2.3 rebounds and one assist per game. He had his struggles from beyond the arc, scoring at just 19.2% while taking 6.5 attempts per game but shot at 42.5% overall, which hints at a potential lights-out shooter who only needs more time to show what he has got.
Carr was extremely dynamic, appeared to be unfazed throughout, and is a versatile scorer who did not back down from taking shots despite his struggles from distance. In a Lakers roster that will afford him the time to make his mark, Carr looks to have all the tools needed to develop into a bonafide superstar, and an immediate bargain.
#2 Cameron Carr will fit in perfectly alongside Luka Doncic
Carr is a high-upside wing player with a 7-foot wingspan and a 42.5-inch vertical. He is a consistent threat inside the perimeter and can quickly emerge as a lob target for the likes of Doncic and Austin Reaves. The former in particular tends to be at his best when he has a target to aim at inside, and Carr is another player alongside Walker-Kessler who can theoretically develop a relationship with Doncic.
The Lakers have committed to a stark change in identity as they attempt to create the kind of team that will allow Doncic to prosper. LeBron James’ departure may have stung, but the Lakers were already actively planning for life after him, and Carr undoubtedly fits into that vision perfectly.
#3 Carr’s weaknesses can be worked on
The upside with the 21-year-old is enormous. However, his ability to immediately contribute may be restricted due to his slender frame and limited creativity on the ball. Further, Carr’s defensive awareness is also something JJ Redick and co. will need to work on if he is to develop into a regular rotation piece.
However, these are all weaknesses that can be worked on. On the other hand, Carr’s explosiveness and potential to emerge as a multi-level shooter is under no doubt. Despite his struggles from deep, the youngster showed remarkable confidence in the way he went about his business, and will be expected to show the same approach when the NBA season arrives.
