The Marines have the harbor surrounded, and any verbal acknowledgment of their bond would brand Vivi a criminal and cost Alabasta its political protection. Vivi calls out over a loudspeaker asking if they will still consider her a friend. The crew cannot answer without destroying her future, so they turn their backs and raise their left arms in silence, each one showing the black X mark they had drawn on themselves earlier in the arc.

The emotional core of the arc peaks when Luffy refuses to accept her self-sacrifice, orders his crew to burn the World Government's flag, and through this action declares war on the entire world just to prove they will never abandon her. Confronted by a level of unconditional love she never thought was possible, Robin’s lifelong trauma gives way, and out of overwhelming desperation, she says, "I want to live!"

The crew loved and maintained her so devotedly, that a Klabautermann manifested inside the ship, which is a mythical spirit that inhabited vessels cared for deeply enough.
When Water 7 shipwrights examine the Merry and report a terminal diagnosis, the news breaks the crew itself before the ship does, sparking a duel between Luffy and Usopp. Yet, the Merry sails herself through the Enies Lobby warzone one final time to rescue the crew, then splits apart on the voyage home. Luffy sets her ablaze in a Viking funeral, and as the fire burns and snow falls, the ship’s spirit speaks its last words to the crew before sinking.

When Doflamingo cornered them on an island and shot Corazon multiple times, Corazon hid Law inside a treasure chest and activated his Calm-Calm Devil Fruit to cast a field of absolute silence around it. He forced a goofy smile, wanting Law’s last memory of him to be a happy one.
The Marineford Arc Takes Everything Luffy Sacrificed And Destroys It
Luffy tortured his own body to reach Marineford, surviving Impel Down and giving away ten years of his lifespan to Ivankov’s hormones. When he finally freed Ace’s sea-prism stone cuffs, the brothers had actually done the impossible. Then Ace stopped running to defend Whitebeard’s honor against Admiral Akainu’s provocation, and everything collapsed in mere moments.
Akainu lunged at the exhausted Luffy, and Ace stepped into the path of a magma fist that burned through his chest, and he died in Luffy’s arms. One Piece had spent a good chunk of time showing Luffy as someone whose willpower could overcome anything, and Marineford exists specifically to demonstrate that willpower also has a limit.
The Post-War Arc Breaks Luffy Completely
Ace’s death was the final blow in a sequence of failures that had been accumulating for days. Luffy had already watched Kuma erase his crew at Sabaody one by one while he stood helpless, then immediately sprinted into a suicidal rescue mission with no time to process any of it. He survived Impel Down and Marineford by suppressing everything and running purely on the belief that he could at least save his brother. When Ace died in his arms, that last pillar collapsed as well.
Luffy woke up on Rusukaina in a manic denial, tearing at his own flesh and screaming that someone as weak as him had no right to the Pirate King’s throne. The viewers had hardly ever seen Luffy surrender his dream before. However, Jinbe was kind enough to physically pin him down and urge him to count what he still had rather than what he had lost, and the reminder that his crew was still out there was the only thing that pulled Luffy back.
