Ravensburger drops gamers into the mists of Ravenloft in Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons

Over the last three and a half decades, Ravenloft has easily become one of Dungeons & Dragons' most terrifying world settings. Nestled within the pocket plane known as the Demiplane of Dread, the Mists of Ravenloft continue whisking D&D players away to Count Strahd von Zarovich's realm, where a bloodthirsty and manipulative vampire reigns supreme.

Ravensburger's Horrified game series has been dropping tabletop players into fearsome worlds overrun by monsters since 2019, when gamers entered a town overrun by classic movie monsters, like Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman. Partnering with Dungeons & Dragons for the first time in 2025, Ravensburger's Horrified is the perfect game to explore D&D without all the trappings that come with sitting through a long campaign. Now players can return to explore yet another world-setting in Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons—Ravenloft.

Ravenloft Is The Place To Be In 2026

2026 has definitely been Strahd Von Zarovich's year, with Dungeons & Dragons' most recent sourcebook, Ravenloft: The Horror Within, revisiting the Domains of Dread with updated material that coincides with D&D 5.5e's 2024 core rules update. Being a D&D fan and player for over 30 years, Strahd and Ravenloft have been a personal favorite since the fiction novel release for Vampire In the Mists back in 1991, and anytime I'm given the opportunity to dip a toe into the mists, I'm game.

When I saw Ravensburger was returning to Dungeons & Dragons after the first highly successful D&D Horrified game in 2025, I was excited. Given my love for all things Ravenloft and Barovia, imagine my bliss when I discovered Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons would return, this time to explore my favorite Domain of Dread.

Endeavoring bravely into Barovia, Horrified's latest board game pits one to five players against the infamous Strahd. Known to be as ruthless and bloodthirsty as he is cunning, temptation is the name of the game for Barovia's darklord. Whether you make it out of his domain alive will wholly depend on how high the Terror Level rises and how well you resist the dark gifts he has to offer.

One of the greatest things about Ravensburger's Horrified games is that they function cooperatively. Players must work together to defeat the four iconic monsters that feature in the game, and each one requires a unique strategy in order to defeat them. That being said, Horrified is also primed perfectly for solo play, meaning that even a single player can get lost in the mists and find themselves braving Barovia's monsters alone.

Tasked with protecting the doomed villagers, the mechanics of Horrified are designed to provide a challenge. Whether it's a full party of five or a single brave hero, Terror Level and the outcome of monster encounters determine how successful the heroes are.at saving the villagers from their fate. If the Terror Level reaches maximum capacity, everyone is too horrified to continue the task, and the heroes lose. If the monster deck comes up empty when it's time to draw a card, it's game over, and the heroes lose.

Ravensburger goes all out when it comes to game design, and a strong part of that is all the components that make up the game. Not only does Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons—Ravenloft come with five Hero standees and 10 Villager standees, but it also has 60 item Tokens, 3 Twig Blight standees, 1 Terror Marker, 1 Frenzy Marker and 1 Horrified Haversack to hold all those item tokens.

Along with the intricately designed game board, there are five Monster mats, five Hero tiles and four monster miniatures, one each for Strahd von Zarovich, Baba Lysaga, Carrionette and the Gulthias Tree. In addition, there are 25 Monster tokens, including the iconic Tarokka cards, Relic tokens, Strahd's Heart of Sorrow and 1 gem token. The game also includes three six-sided monster dice and one D20.

Once all the cardboard token pieces are punched out, they fit perfectly into the game's box, making it easy to organize everything, so the next game is ready to set up and play without a lot of fuss. Even the packaging design is enticing, featuring a glimpse at all the horrifying elements that make Ravenloft such an iconic world-setting.

Retailing for around $29.99, players will get a lot of mileage out of this game, which is not just highly re-playable, but customizable by drawing monsters from previous Horrified games into Ravenloft to spice things up for game nights with friends and family.
