Sadie Sink is ready to address her mystery role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor offered up three exclusive confirmations about her Marvel Cinematic Universe character in a new promo for the superhero sequel.
The official Instagram account for the Spider-Man film series released a new promo featuring Sink. In it, the actor talks about how she has "seen so many theories about who I’m playing. To match your incredible energy, I’ve decided to give you three exclusive, confirmed answers right now."
Who Is Sadie Sink Not Playing?
Unfortunately, after the actor revealed, "I can confirm I am not Spider-Man," it became clear that audiences had been baited. Sink then stated that she is also "not Aunt May," Peter Parker's beloved aunt, played by Marisa Tomei in the MCU until 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
"And third, I can definitely confirm that I am in this movie,” Sink said at the end of the promo. She then urged viewers to head to the theater later this month to see "who I really am" in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Check out the promo below.
The secrecy surrounding Sink's Brand New Day character has been compared to how Marvel and Sony tried to keep Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's involvement in No Way Home under wraps. Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal even admitted as much during a recent interview with ScreenRant.
"When we had the three Spideys in the last movie, and it was the worst-kept secret in Hollywood, everybody sort of pretended not to know, but knew. I think people love to be surprised. They don’t really want to know everything," she said about keeping Sink's role a mystery.
"They want the experience of what movies give you, which is shock and awe and surprise. So I think in the same way that we’ve been really disciplined, I think that’s what the audience is also craving," Pascal added.
All Signs Point to Sadie Sink Playing Jean Grey
Despite the secrecy, many fans believe that Sink is playing the mutant Jean Grey in Brand New Day. While characters like Rachel Cole and Firestar were briefly thrown out as possibilities, Jean Grey has stuck around as the most likely character for Sink.
The trailers for Brand New Day have revealed that Sink's character has psychic powers, showing her taking over the minds of people. Given that Jean Grey has that same power set, and that Sink has repeatedly sidestepped answering any questions from the press about whether she's playing the popular X-Men mutant, it seems extremely likely that that is who she is indeed playing in the Spider-Man sequel.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which Tom Holland considers to be the best Spider-Man yet, "it's a brand new day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control," per the synopsis.
"But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them," concludes the synopsis.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated to hit theaters on July 31, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
