NEW YORK — The organizational plan was for Yankees left-hander Max Fried to make a second rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday night, then decide if there will be a third early next week.

Tuesday’s rainout led to a very surprising change of plans.

Forced to play a second doubleheader in three days, the Yankees will activate Fried from the injured list to start Game 2 against the Pirates on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole will oppose Pirates righty Mitch Keller in the regularly scheduled 1:05 p.m. game, then Fried will make his first start in more than two months in Game 2, which will start at 7:05 p.m.

The Yankees and Dodgers split a doubleheader on Sunday in New York after Saturday night’s game was rained out.

Fried, who has been on the injured list since May 16 with a bone bruise in his pitching elbow, will be on a pitch count of 60. He threw 52 pitches last Friday in his first rehab start, a three-inning, two-run outing for Scranton against Worcester.

The three-time All-Star was 4-3 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts before being shelved.

In his last start, he left a game in Baltimore on May 13 after three innings due to elbow discomfort.
