A dead dog and nearly a dozen other pets that were starving and sick have been found at a home in Monmouth County.

On Monday, an anonymous tipster said that animals were being kept at a Neptune Township home in “deplorable conditions,” the Monmouth County SPCA said in a statement. The non-profit’s animal control division and Neptune Township Police responded to the residence.

A group of eight kittens were found in an outdoor enclosure that the animal welfare group described as “filthy.” They all appear to have upper respiratory infections.

In a chain-link pen, two female pit bulls were found with no food or water. They were underweight with overgrown nails and missing patches of fur.

Both dogs were determined to have been bred multiple times, according to the organization. An ultrasound later found that they are not currently pregnant.

In addition, the remains of another pit bull were found in a garbage pale on the side of the house, Monmouth County SPCA said. The dog’s cause of death is still under investigation.

The Monmouth County SPCA said multiple counts of animal cruelty have since been filed. The Neptune Township Police Department did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday evening.

The surviving pets are all being treated at the non-profit’s shelter in Eatontown.
