A man who barricaded himself inside an RV late Monday night in the parking lot of a Burlington County Walmart may have been in possession of a flamethrower and other weapons, investigators said.
Officers from the Lumberton Township Police Department responded to the Route 28 store shortly after 11 p.m. after they received a report of a dispute between two people that escalated into a robbery, according to a statement from the department.
One of the people involved in the altercation, a 38-year-old Florida man, got inside a tan-and-green RV parked near the edge of the lot and refused repeated requests by officers to exit the vehicle or talk with them, police said.
The officers were also informed that the man may have had a flamethrower and other weapons inside the vehicle.
Other law enforcement agencies were called to the scene, as well as a trained crisis negotiator and mental health professionals who engaged with the man throughout the overnight hours and into Tuesday afternoon, investigators said.
The incident ended peacefully when the man was taken into custody by the New Jersey State Police, authorities said. He was charged with robbery, obstruction and weapons-related offenses.
The department said other charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
It was unclear if any weapons were actually inside the RV.
The man suffered a minor injury at some point during the incident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. No officers or members of the public were injured.
