On Monday night, the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees had plenty of fireworks. There were 13 runs scored with three home runs, including two dingers by Jazz Chisholm Jr., all in the first three innings.
While the runs stopped after the third inning, the fireworks did not, as the two teams got into a benches-clearing brawl after Jose Caballero grounded into a double play in the eighth inning.
After the contest, Caballero spoke to the media about the benches-clearing incident, per Foul Territory.
“For me, I grounded out into a double play. He got what he wanted. He should go to the other side and he was walking to the wrong side,” Cabalerro said. “I was a little bit surprised about it.”
Caballero is known for abusing the pitch clock, waiting until the last possible second to enter the batter’s box and then look up for the pitch. This causes a disruption in the pitcher’s timing and the occasional clock violation. He did this against Dennis Santana in the eighth inning with Austin Wells on first base. Santana was still able to get the ground ball, leading to the double play.
As Santana walked off the field seemed to blow Cabalerro a kiss and then say something to Caballero, which led to the altercation.
“Just don’t (take) that long (at) home plate and that’s it,” Santana said when asked what he said to Caballero.
“At this point, he’s lucky he doesn’t get a ball right away because at this point, it’s been four years with the same rules, which we all should know about the rules,” Caballero later added. “The whole league should know who I am, what I do (in) the box, and they should be aware of it. For you to get mad at something that the league’s implementing — you shouldn’t be mad at me, you should be mad at someone else.”
No one was ejected from the game, and both are expected to be available in the second game of the series on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.
